Meadowlarks and leaves were the subject matter for my very first art lesson outside of traditional school. I attended private instruction at the home of a local artist immediately after school some days. She taught me that leaves are not just green, but red, brown, blue and every color in between. How shadows are rich with color; not just black and grey. This was the first of many lessons she taught me and forever changed how I see things.

One day I was pulled out of class by a teacher and informed that I was not to go to my lesson after school. My art instructor had been a victim of domestic violence. Her body was found under a patch of poison oak just outside of our small town. The police caught her husband after he returned with a friend to conceal his crime. It was a grisly death and took me into adulthood to fully process the effect it had on my young mind and my future works.

This piece is a small tribute to her. I wanted to create something that is standalone beautiful that also hints to her tragic end. The meadowlark looking down from above and the leaves from the underside looking up.
